My dear colleagues

Friends from Print and Electronic Media,

Ladies and Gentlemen.....

Assalamu alaikum... and a very good morning to you all

I feel delighted to be here with you today at the findings dissemination session of ‘Public Attitude Follow-up Survey’ of Police Reform Program. Let me thank PRP and our development partners- UNDP, DFID and EC for their excellent contribution to the uplift of police image.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Like many other countries, the workload of Bangladesh Police has increased manifold over the years. But the truth is that Bangladesh Police suffers from severe resource constraints. But with all these limitations, police cannot sit back. It has to work relentlessly to uphold the rule of law and ensure safety and security of the citizens.

As you all know, our colonial laws and regulations simply fail to cope with the needs of the time. Police Act 1861 no longer suits the changing trends. Hence, legal reform has become an important agenda for PRP. Keeping this in view, the draft Police Ordinance 2007 was prepared to make police pro-people and service-oriented. It is true that the service delivered by police in our country has never been up to people’s expectations. In fact, good policing requires a work climate that ensures an environment of cooperation, cohesion and synergy among all. PRP and our development partners are giving their best efforts to bridge the gap between police and the community with logistic, training and other necessary supports.

Distinguished Guests,

This Survey result is a reflection of the citizen’s perceptions about Police. We are pleased to know that survey findings show a significant improvement in the police performance. But there is no room to be self-complacent. We will have to take corrective measures based on the recommendations of the study while fixing our future strategies.

I would like to thank our distinguished guests for sparing their valuable time for us. The survey team of the Data Management Aid also deserves thanks for sharing with us the detailed findings.

Thank you all once again.
